Abby Gonzalez Success Story
Abby Gonzalez an athlete.
A short introduction to yourself?
My name is Abby Gonzalez. I’m 11 years old. I’m a grey-black belt at Fight Sports Gym. I love being active and doing things that involve fitness or adventure like skateboarding, rock climbing, and horseback riding. I also enjoy cooking, playing piano and guitar, and doing crafts. Pretty much I love staying busy.
How did you develop your fondness for your sport and at what age did you start learning karate?
I started Jiu-Jitsu when I was 5 years old. My dad put me in Jiu-Jitsu because he loves the sport and he and my mom wanted me to learn self-defense.
What is your style and what rank do you currently hold in?
Jiu-Jitsu Grey-Black belt.
Do you have a favorite Sensei?
I have different coaches and I’ve learned different things from all of them so I don’t have a favorite. I think it’s great to be able to gain knowledge not just from one person, but many.
How did you get into this position and how did your journey in this sport go?
Since I grew up doing Jiu-Jitsu, it’s a part of my life now. I love it and I’m determined to be the best I can be at it. Currently, I’m training longer hours and training in other disciplines (wrestling, boxing, and judo) to help my Jiu-Jitsu goals. And, I’m also competing as much as I can.
Do you take sports as a profession or is it just a hobby?
Right now it’s not a profession, but I would like it to be. It would be doing something I love for a living.
What challenges have you faced in getting to where you are now?
You can also share any injury story. Balancing my time has been challenging since I take my school work as seriously as my training. So far, my dedication has paid off. As for injuries, I’ve been lucky. I’ve only had sprains and a broken toe.
What motivates you most about your profession as an athlete?
I love the sport. I’m a very competitive person and I feel great when I train or compete.
Do you have anything you want everyone to learn?
That I am so grateful to my parents for putting me in sports at such a young age because it has taught me self-defense and discipline and it has given me a lot of confidence.
What tournament or match you have won are you most proud of and why?
My last match at the Naga competition. I was moved up in weight class and to the teen division so my opponent was 19 pounds heavier than me and older. It was a very difficult match and winning it made me feel like I was on top of the world.
