Acheil Tac is a basketball player.
A short introduction to yourself?
My Name is Acheil Tac. I was born in Khartoum, Sudan, and moved to the United States in 2003. My love for basketball started when I started playing the sport in High School my freshman year. Before then, I did not know much of the sport and didn’t know how to play. Fast forward to my junior year when I started getting recruited for scholarships. I signed to play at the University of North Texas, where I graduated in 2016 with a bachelor’s in marketing and a minor in psychology. After graduation, I started my professional season in Europe playing in Switzerland and eventually after in Czech Republic, Greece, and Italy, and now signed in Panathinaikos in Greece.
How did you develop your fondness for your sport and at what age did you start learning karate?
Most kids started playing at a young age. I started playing basketball when I was 15 in high school. My development period was my sophomore year. After that season my sophomore year, I started taking it seriously and I just started getting better and better and finally saw a future in it at the college level.
What is your style and what rank do you currently hold in?
I am a professional athlete playing in Europe and will be representing my national team as well in the upcoming years. I play the positions Power Forward and Center.
Do you have a favorite Sensei?
My favorite basketball player is myself and Kevin durant.
How did you get into this position and how did your journey in this sport go?
I got into basketball by just trying it as a hobby at first. After trying it, I started growing love for it and the rest was history. I was blessed to get a free education through basketball and get the opportunity to start my professional career after.
Do you take sports as a profession or is it just a hobby?
I do this sport on a professional level. I am now playing in Europe professionally.
What challenges have you faced in getting to where you are now? You can also share any injury story.
Injuries have limited me at some parts of my athletic journey. I suffered an intense injury at the beginning of my professional career and in the middle of my professional career. What I have learned through it all is to continue to be resilient and to take care of my body so I have longevity in the game.
What motivates you most about your profession as an athlete?
To inspire other Girls, especially girls from where I am from ( South Sudan) to play and use it as a means to better. The love of the game motivates me to be an elite athlete and strive to continue to play at the highest level. The opportunities within being an athlete also continue to give me the motivation I need to continue.
Do you have anything you want everyone to learn?
I want everyone to learn that athletes are people and not robots. We do the unimaginable with our bodies and are very resilient, but we also experience normal emotions that normal human beings experience as well. I say that to say, it is okay to empathize with them and to understand them on a different level. Our sports are your entertainment, but our life and careers.
What tournament or match you have won are you most proud of and why?
I won a championship my first season as a professional athlete in Switzerland. I have also won awards like MVP. I have competed in too many matches to pick one, but the most memorable one was in Switzerland when we won the championship in 2017.
