Demian Balderrama
Demian Balderrama an athlete.
A short introduction to yourself?
I am a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighter, I love fighting and teaching the art whenever it’s possible.
How did you develop your fondness for your sport and at what age did you start learning?
I’ve always been someone that doesn’t like to be shoved so fighting was always for me, when I transition into training only Jiu Jitsu I learned more control and how to use it for a much better way of being.
What is your style and what rank do you currently hold in?
I think my style is more of a strategic offensive fighter, I like pushing the pace with the correct decisions. I am currently a brown belt under professor Galvão.
Do you have a favourite Sensei?
Professor Galvão has helped refine my style and my technique, as well as helped me grow on and off the mats to be a better person.
How did you get into this position and how did your journey in this sport go?
I got into training because I was given a challenge by my dad, and knowing I wouldn’t refuse I got to training in MMA first, eventually, the MMA classes for kids stopped and only jiu Jitsu became available, that’s when I started training only Jiu-Jitsu and grappling when I was around 12 years old.
Do you take sports as a profession or is it just a hobby?
For me now it’s a profession because of the titles that I have been able to achieve, the seminars I’ve been able to give, the belts that I have to defend in organizations. I feel right now I have been able to use jiu-jitsu to support myself financially.
What challenges have you faced in getting to where you are now? You can also share any injury story.
Living in TJ and crossing the US border to train in San Diego has always been a hassle so I think that it of itself has always been a challenge, also there was a time when my disk from my back where compressing and injury my nerves to the point where I couldn’t walk for around 3-4 months. That helped me realize I needed to be smarter about how I did things.
What motivates you most about your profession as an athlete?
I think the fact of just being able to fight is exciting to me always.
Do you have anything you want everyone to learn?
Well as long as I can share how Jiu-jitsu has done a good impact on my life and how it could probably make one in everyone else’s, I think that’s a good start
What tournament or match you have won are you most proud of and why?
I think the recent world title that I won was the most important because I learned that it wasn’t about where I do my preparation, who I trained with or if I have it in me, it’s just a matter of I can do it because it’s me.
