Elisa Cruz
Elisa Cruz is a jiu-jitsu athlete.
A short introduction to yourself?
I’m 18 years old, born in Rio de Janeiro, I’m a jiu-jitsu athlete, currently a purple belt on the 3R jiu-jitsu team.
What sports do you practise?
Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
How did you develop your fondness for your sport and at what age did you start learning?
My uncle and my cousin were already training, they were the ones who took me the first time. I started practising the sport when I was 10 years old and it was love at first sight. I love jiu-jitsu and the communion it proposes among people, but for sure what made me stop and think that this is what I want for my life were championships, it’s very good adrenaline.
What is your style and what rank do you currently hold in?
Competitive.
Do you have a favourite Sensei?
Yes, I have.
How did you get into this position and how did your journey in this sport go?
It’s been 8 years since I practice jiu-jitsu, but even so, I feel that my journey in this sport is just beginning, jiu-jitsu has taken me to amazing places and made me meet wonderful people. I’m still in the process, I’m aiming for big titles that as a professional I haven’t won yet.
Do you take sports as a profession or is it just a hobby?
Profession.
What challenges have you faced in getting to where you are now? You can also share any injury story.
Jiu-jitsu is an expensive sport, because of that my biggest challenge has always been the financial part, but I always had people who helped me to pursue my dream. My parents always encouraged me a lot, and they always went out of their way to pay for an athlete daughter, I still want to be able to repay everything they did for me.
What motivates you most about your profession as an athlete?
One day I’ll be able to live on jiu-jitsu alone.
Do you have anything you want everyone to learn?
The beginning in jiu-jitsu is difficult, everyone will have good days and discouraging days, some will want to give up due to lack of motivation and when motivation is lacking, discipline is needed to continue.
What tournament or match you have won are you most proud of and why?
Without a doubt, the double gold medal at the Rio Open, everything that happened during that week could have made me miss that event. But I was prepared and thank God I was champion in two categories, submitting all the fights I had.
