Farouk Abdesselem Success Story
Farouk Abdesselem an athlete.
A short introduction to yourself?
My name is Farouk Abdesselem, I’m from Marseille (France)and I’m doing Karate.
How did you develop your fondness for your sport and at what age did you start learning karate?
So I started Karate when I was 5 years old, because of my father who was my Trainer.
What is your style and what rank do you currently hold in?
I’m doing Kumite (combat) and my world ranking is 8.
What do you like about Kata or Kumite more?
Loving both, Kata is wonderful and asks you to have several assets, but my soul chooses combat maybe because of my life.
Do you have a favorite Sensei?
I have a brother who becomes my Sensei (Tareq), we have done a lot of tough work together.
How did you get into this position and how did your journey in this sport go?
Start with an early wake-up, running, nap, training karate, and do the same with less power day after day.
Do you take sports as a profession or is it just a hobby?
To be on top in karate, you should be crazy about that, you have to think of it every morning and night before sleep, you have to think about it every time you open your mouth to talk or eat when you are like that you start to be professional because you care about all details who make who you are.
What challenges have you faced in getting to where you are now? You can also share any injury story.
After 7 years in the Young French Team, I stop completely karaté for 2 years and a half, I was getting into real life (not high-level sport), I learn so many things and the biggest things I learn is that THE ONLY THING in this world that is always with you is KARATE! I get back. In 2018, I was getting some success but then get injured and stop for 10 months, I never put the two knees on the floor and I just work hard to come back more hard.
What motivates you most about your profession as an athlete?
I love to fight myself to a new challenge, to question myself indefinitely, I’m never satisfied and I have a lot of expectations.
Do you have anything you want everyone to learn?
Everybody thinks they know you because they know your name but they don’t know your story, so create it for yourself, first & always yourself!
What tournament or match you have won are you most proud of and why?
Of course we all proud of our victory but for me, I have more memories of the day that I lose, because that day you don’t know if you fall for the rest of your life or you step up, and when I step up a few weeks after that’s my best feelings.
