Kate Salgir Sisters Success Story
Kate Salgir sister of child athletes.
We are sisters Kate Salgir, 10 years old, dark blue belt, 4 kyus. Liza Salgir, 8 years old, green belt, 6 kyus. Our surname is of Turkish origin. Father is from Russia. Mother moved to Russia from China more than eleven years ago. We are half Chinese, we were born here in Russia. We live, study, train in Moscow. Our parents have always wanted us to practice martial arts. Therefore, we received a lot of support from them. We came to sports in 2017 with the beginning of Kate’s education in elementary school.
That time a wonderful young teacher Michael Tan came to our school. He possesses the second dan of WSKF karate, winner, medalist, a participant in many competitions. Michael is a student of the famous champion Sergey Zhukov. He gathered a group of children and began training. Liza also attended training but was not legally enrolled in the group due to her age. In the beginning, we practised Kumite along with the mastery of kihon and kata. Over time, it became more interesting for us to perform the kata of our style, the Shotokan style. Because it is kata and traditional style karate that has the greatest content, the most difficult. Kata athletes are physically stronger. Agree that speed, strength, endurance, flexibility, balance, a sense of pace, composure and control, and static postures develop simultaneously. We were successful and after a year it became obvious to everyone that we had outgrown the rest of the children in our first group.
Our young first sensei with a lot gladly handed us over for further training to his senior fellow in the karate federation. Sometimes we are happy to train with our friends from the beginning group, but now the main place of our training is a special Moscow sports school for preparing a reserve for the Olympics. Our sensei is Pavel Pustov. 4th dan of WSKF karate. Trainer with over thirty years of experience. Has trained many successful athletes. He is one of the best coaches and an incredibly humble person. He is demanding and kind. It is impossible to get the belt from his hands if the candidate is unworthy. We are among the best among his students. We are trying very hard.
By the way, on the advice of the trainer, we take dance lessons twice a week. This develops not only physically, but also fosters a sense of pace. In karate, we regularly participate in sports competitions of various levels. We win in many. In some contests, this is not yet achievable. There are also some prestigious competitions that we are not allowed to win. Unfortunately, we have to admit this fact. Everyone is accustomed to corruption in power, politics and everything that is associated with big money. But children’s sports are no exception. The results of competitions are predictable, when the prestige of the more famous sports schools may suffer. This has to do with funding. It is very disappointing to face unfair refereeing and the adjustment of the competition protocols in favour of one of the schools. It hurts both sports and athletes. But we will continue to train. The main victory is victory over oneself. Victory over yesterday’s self. It is difficult to say whether we will be professional athletes or not. But we know for sure that we will practice karate even in old age. Sure, we have a dream to open our gym under our name and teach children. This is possible only by becoming famous in sports. This requires victories in well-known competitions. We hope that everything is still ahead. So far, the most prestigious competition for Kate was participation in the Russian Championship. Although it was not possible to take the prize, participation is already very honourable.
When the epidemic began, we freed one room in the apartment from furniture and covered it with a tatami mat. We continued training at home. We had a smartphone and a tripod. We filmed the video and sent it to our trainer by e-mail. Soon we decided to register an Instagram account and post-training episodes there. It turned out to be incredibly interesting. We learn how to beautifully shoot videos, edit, dub. Our video quality has improved over the past year. More than 1100 karatekas of the world follow us. We think this is a lot. There will be more. We encourage everyone to join our training. There are no secrets. Every day you need to take a small step along the way and no goal will be impossible to achieve. This is our manifesto.
