Navjyot Sachin
Navjyot Sachin is an athlete.
A short introduction to yourself?
Hi, my name is Sachin, I’m a 24-year-old armature Canadian Brazilian jiu jitsu competitor. I was born in Trinidad and Tobago and moved to Canada in 2007.
How did you develop your fondness for your sport and at what age did you start?
I started training bjj when I was 19 years old, I was in college at the time and I was looking for something to keep me active, I never played any sports during high school, and my main form of working out was weight lifting. I kept hearing people talk about how great Bjj was. So, I found the closest bjj school, bought a Gi and started training, and i haven’t been able to stop since.
What is your style and what rank do you currently hold in (your sport)?
I like to play a lot of butterflies, single leg x guard, and X guard. I’m a 4-stripe blue belt.
Are you a member of any sports team? if not have you ever been?
I train out of Adrenaline MMA, in London Ontario.
Describe your major highlights and achievements in sports in the past.
The major highlight for me so far was getting bronze at the 2021 Canada AJP Tour. I’m really proud of this achievement because of the way I won, I was able to submit 2 out of 3 of my opponents to secure my place.
Are there any short-term goals you’d like to accomplish in the next few months to a couple of years?
I really want to get gold at the Ontario Open, I’ve been training a lot and I know I have to try to achieve that. I can’t guarantee that I’ll get it, but I’m definitely going to try.
Do you take sports as a profession or is it just a hobby?
It’s mainly a hobby, at least for now.
What challenges have you faced in getting to where you are now? You can also share any injury story.
My first competition at blue belt, I was reaped in a straight ankle lock and tore my acl. I’ve never felt pain like that in my entire life. It was really hard to get comfortable again training and competing with this injury but I managed to do it.
What motivates you most about your profession as an athlete?
I really like seeing my potential, how far I can take this hobby of mine. I also train with professional MMA fighters and high level bjj competitors, so that gives me motivation to work hard.
Do you have anything you want everyone to learn?
Work hard I guess, I can’t give anyone any advice yet, I’m still learning myself.
