Simone Marino
Simone Marino is an athlete.
A short introduction to yourself?
My name is Simone Marino born and raised in Florence. Nicknamed “Il Maro”
I have been living in Rome for 4 years now. I am an athlete at the Carabinieri Sports Center. I have been doing Karate since the age of 6 in the Kumite specialty (combat). I am the holder of the +84 category of the Italian national team FIJLKAM. I have been with the national team since I was 14. Karate for me has always been a passion with ups and downs, sufferings and joys that have allowed me to work harder every day.
I attended nursing college for two years, which I then gave up on to devote myself to the Olympic qualification. Now I am engaged in the Faculty of Biotechnology at Sapienza. My teacher who raised me is Francesco Puleo of Team Karate Puleo. A florentine gym that made me like a family supporting me and supporting me since I was little. I have a tattoo that says “post fata resurge” in honour of this sport and the moments it made me live and I continue to live every day.
How did you develop your fondness for your sport and at what age did you start learning?
I developed a passion for this sport by watching martial arts movies and also because my parents wanted me to become a fighter.
What is your style and what rank do you currently hold in?
Vice World Champion 2021
Vice U21 World Champion 2017
European Champion 2017
2 European Youth Bronzes
Team World Champion 2021
World Team Bronze 2018
14 times Italian champion
Do you take sports as a profession or is it just a hobby?
I do this sport as a profession. I am inside the Carabinieri sports centre. But it was always my hobby before it was a job.
What tournament or match you have won are you most proud of and why?
The race I liked the most is the 2021 world championship.
What challenges have you faced in getting to where you are now? You can also share any injury story.
I was injured first in a muscle and then I had a serious knee problem. I had to miss the Olympic qualification and the continental (European) competition due to these injuries. It was the difficult year 2021 for me. I met a great trainer (Alberto Dimario) who allowed me, despite having a serious knee problem, to be able to participate in the world championships. Given my injury, the idea was to participate in the world championship to try and do at least one race this year. Eventually, I arrived in Dubai and won 6 matches out of 5, allowing me to become Vice World Champion.
Do you have anything you want everyone to learn?
What I want people to learn is that you have to be tougher than life to be able to move forward, when you fall you have to get up even stronger. My motto is “post fata resurge”.
