Julia Bickel
A short introduction to yourself?
I am a 30 year old female, South African trail runner. I am relatively new to the sport but committed to giving it my all as I compete in a few races in Europe.
How did you develop your fondness for your sport and at what age did you start learning?
I have always been active. In school I was particularly fond of swimming however did not continue with sport once I entered varsity. I only started running in January 2019.
What is your style and what rank do you currently hold?
Marathon trail running events
Are you a member of any sports team? if not have you ever been?
No
Do you have a favourite sports teacher?
No
Describe your major highlights and achievements in sports in the past.
My greatest achievement was coming 8th female at the Eiger Ultra 35k. My first international race.
Do you take sports as a profession or is it just a hobby?
At the moment it is a hobby.
What challenges have you faced in getting to where you are now? You can also share any injury story.
I think starting the sport so recently has left me at a bit of a disadvantage. My body is not as conditioned as other athletes who have been running for many years. Owing to this I spend a lot of time strength training and managing my recovery protocols. I did develop compartment syndrome around eight months into my trail running career. This has been challenging but I have learned to manage it by improving my strength and through regular lyno therapy.
What motivates you most about your profession?
That there is always room for improvement and the places that trail running can take you.
Do you think everybody should practise sports or do you want everyone to learn?
Yes, definitely. Sport or any sort of physical activity is a form of stress relief and helps with one’s mental health. It helps people connect and form relationships with others who partake in a similar activity. Not only are there mental benefits but physical/ health benefits.
What tournament or match you have won are you most proud of and why?
N/A
Are there any short-term goals you’d like to accomplish in the next few months to a couple of years?
I’m looking to podium at a World Tour or UTMB event.
