Thiago Sanches
Thiago Sanches a jiu-jitsu athlete.
A short introduction to yourself?
I’m Thiago Sanches. I was born and raised in Madureira, Rio de Janeiro – Brazil.
How did you develop your fondness for judo and jiu-jitsu and at what age did you start learning karate?
I started in 1996 however I had to stop because I didn’t have available time to train and fight jiu-jitsu back when but after over 20 years. I’m back!
What is your style and what rank do you currently hold in judo and jiu-jitsu?
I love doing guard but if I have to pass someone else’s guard.. I’ll do it with no problem. According to AJP international rank, I’m #10 in my city #42 in the country and #101 in South America in my division which is light heavyweight – blue belt master 1.
Do you have a favourite Sensei?
My bjj master Thiago Cidro and my Judo sensei Junior Freitas and Robson Bandeira
How did you get into this position and how did your journey in this sport go?
Jiu-jitsu came back into my life after covid hit and I felt really good about it.. jiu-jitsu gave back to me the pleasure of fighting and training for a goal. I’ve been doing well so far and I can’t wait to come back to Brazil and compete again.
Do you take sports as a profession or is it just a hobby?
It’s a hobby however I take it way too serious.
What challenges have you faced in getting to where you are now? You can also share any injury story.
The greatest thing about BJJ is you’re challenging yourself and when you think you’re good… you’re not good enough. You must improve yourself every single day.
What motivates you most about your profession as an athlete?
The opportunity to learn from different people and exchange experiences
Do you have anything you want everyone to learn?
Be a great learner but also be a greater teacher. Sharing your knowledge is the best way to keep learning.
What tournament or match you have won are you most proud of and why?
When I won the AJP Tour in my city. A year before I lost in the 1st fight but in 2021 I was the champion and of course I’m very proud of it.
